‘Woke up This Morning…’

In my almost 13 years of news reporting and entertainment journalism, I’ve had some really fun experiences but this moment is definitely one for the books. I got a chance to attend my first ever movie junket for PopCulture.com and it was an absolute blast. Maybe even more so since it was surrounding one of my favorite TV shows — The Sopranos! Most humbled and grateful to be speaking to the very kind cast (Michael Gandolfini, Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Michela De Rossi, Ray Liotta) and director (Alan Taylor) of the highly-anticipated prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, it was a moment to remember and one I am so thankful for.

It’s a real blessing to be working in a field that is not only fulfilling with the chance to share and interpret social commentary and criticism through an art form like film with other cinephiles, but recognize that the privilege to work in a job like this is a real gift. These guys were so much fun (and oh my gosh, the absolute warmest and funniest) — be sure to watch the complete junket, hot off the press, above; and if you are interested in more awesome content from PopCulture.com, head to our YouTube channel for the latest.

‘Don’t Read the Last Page’

This past year has been a challenging year for so many and while I’ll get to that in another post later this week detailing the pain of 2020, I do want to share something that has me counting my blessings — the parts we can be grateful for amid the darkness. While an event from last Christmas left a hole in my heart, it is one that has brought me closer to some of my friends, recognizing who is genuine and who isn’t. I think that’s what age does though, right? You just get it all of a sudden.

But while certain friends and, of course, my family have been salvation during this global pandemic, I am blessed and grateful for work (and my amazing co-workers) being that totem for me too. This year was rough with COVID-19 and just tragic news coverage. Some stories took a toll each day. Sifting through information, first-hand accounts, videos, all of it can break you some days and ground you. With nowhere to go but an arm’s length, it was a lot of reflecting, disconnecting from the noise and dropping everything to spend time with my sister and parents, staying indoors, protecting them, helping them. All of it produced an interesting latent function though, ironically, that allowed me to grow outside myself — and like everything in life, the balance is important. It helps you gain perspective to make better decisions, gain a sense of calm, and see the big picture again.

With a career embedded in just about every aspect of life with no way to turn off, I got to jump outside my comfort zone and head into a realm of broadcast with work, finally getting the chance to apply everything I’ve learned in school to another aspect of reporting. I never imagined it would go that way, but here we are at the end of 2020 and I’ve filmed 18 (one embargoed for January) episodes for our ViacomCBS brand PopCulture’s @ Home series.

It all started at the end of June when I got my first interview with Ernie Hudson, which was a dream come true. (Imagine telling 4-year-old Tania about that!) I can’t even remember how I did it, but I can tell you, I was nervous AF. I had never done anything like it before and then I got another one, and another one, and another one… and I am so grateful. Talking to so many people that I have looked up to for years and admired, is an incredibly humbling experience. Work hard, friends. Like my favorite personality, Conan O’Brien once said, “Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

Womanista Exclusive: Lindsay Arnold Reveals Who Might Be Partner David Ross’ Competition on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Lindsay Arnold 2-201740735 663

Last week, I had the honor and privilege to chat with Dancing With the Stars pro, Lindsay Arnold for an exclusive interview with Womanista! She is such an incredibly easy-going, friendly and bubbly person—it was a lot of fun to write up and showcase her bright personality. If you are watching the hot ABC show every Monday night, you will have noticed that the 23-year old is burning up the dance floor this season with former Chicago Cubs player, David Ross. The two are sensational and really setting a bar for the season’s competitors. I’m rooting for both of them and cannot wait to see how the rest of this 24th season unravels.

In our exclusive, Lindsay dished not just on the show, its competitors and her rituals before every performance, but shared what her World Series-winning partner really means to her. Check out the first interview in our Lindsay Arnold exclusive, only at Womanista! (Also, check out her Womanista Approved Influencer picks, where the Utah native outlines her favorite things from beauty to entertainment to fitness and more, that you must have!)

Womanista Exclusive: Lindsay Arnold Reveals Who Might Be Partner David Ross’ Competition on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

With its 24th season well underway, Dancing with the Stars is on fire and one dancer burning up the ballroom this year is none other than bubbly and congenial Utah-native, Lindsay Arnold.
Last week, Arnold and her partner, former Chicago Cubs player, David Ross hit the dance floor for the show’s first-ever Vegas night, full of 11 Sin City-inspired routines that included everything from the samba to the foxtrot.
While the pair performed a sexy “Magic Mike Live” number as a jazz routine much to Ross’ apprehension, Arnold, ever the encouraging teacher with a heart as glittery as the Mirrorball, knew he had it in the bag. The two earned 31 points that night — his highest of the season and an accolade she is incredibly proud of.
“That is truly my favorite part of being on the show — the rewarding moments where I see how much my student has learned,” Arnold said. “It means a lot that I have had such incredible partners who respect me as a coach and trust me to be their teacher.”

Soup’s Up! Bidding Farewell to E!’s “The Soup”

After 22 seasons, E! is finally saying goodbye to The Soup—a weekly pop culture clip show rooted in satire and sarcasm, hailed by fans and critics alike as one of the most hilarious and cleverest programs the network has ever seen. Okay, so maybe the critics never really said much because they’re all pandering to the drama of the socialites and superficial programmingbut it was a fantastic show.

As a true staple on E! for more than two decades and after Joel McHale took the reins and reformatted its predecessor, Talk Soup in 2004 with the help of a fantastic group of writers and producers, simply put, The Soup was ‘broth-taking.’

“Lip Sync Battle” Hits All The High Notes

Jimmy Fallon is a smart entertainer who knows exactly what audiences want. Springing from a very popular segment on The Tonight ShowLip Sync Battle is a certified hit for Spike television. Drawing a total of 2.2 million viewers for its premiere on April 2, the numbers are incredibly big for an unscripted premiere on the newly re-branded television network that is now opening the doors of its boys club and courting the female demographic.

If you’re a fan of Fallon’s, you would know that the lip sync battles have been extremely popular for quite some time now, with many of the segments featuring huge stars lip-syncing their favorite tracks. Since first being introduced on the late night talk show a year ago, so many of these lip sync battles have since gone viral including Emma Stone’s with 48 million hits on YouTube, followed closely by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Stephen Merchant’s reaching nearly 42 million. After such success and the broad social medium helping to assess popularity, it’s no surprise Fallon figured fans would want more.

Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and executive produced by Stephen Merchant (Hello Ladies) and John Krasinski (The Office), Lip Sync Battle is hosted by LL Cool J and features color commentary by Chrissy Teigen.  In the premiere episode, Fallon faces off with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and the results are hilarious. The two pulled no stops and went all out with their performances. In the first round, they sang songs in a similar style seen from the segments on The Tonight Show. Johnson kicked the first round off with a little “Tay-Tay” (obviously, Urban Dictionary for Taylor Swift) and performed “Shake It Off” with the charisma and dance skills of a school girl. Fallon followed, and in his all boyish charms sang Harry Belefonte’s “Jump in the Line (Shake, Senora),” getting the audience to their feet and into a conga line.
