‘It‘s Up to the Women’

When her husband assumed the presidency, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote It’s Up to the Women, a book written during the height of the Great Depression brimming with advice to women of all ages, on every aspect of life. She became a champion of women’s rights and of civil rights, and today is honored with the foundation Eleanors Legacy which recruits, trains and supports pro-choice Democrat women to run for state and local office throughout New York.

It’s a foundation I love and first learned about from my very dear and amazingly kind-hearted friend Caileigh Scott, who is also a member of the organization lending her voice and support in making a difference. (She is a literal superhero, I love her! Go give her a follow on Instagram.) When you realize women make up 51% of the U.S. population but are only a mere 23% in Congress, you know it’s time for women to take a seat and make a difference. Why sit back and be passive about laws being decided by archaic, patriarchal models based on ideologies of cis-white men? It makes no sense. When women run and win, we all win and that’s the goal here with this super cute tee I bought from Shop Social Goods that helps fund Eleanor’s Legacy and its Conference Committee, which aids in the continuation of its creation and funding of a pipeline for women leaders up and down the ballot across the city. If you would like to get one, head to their shop! This is an off-white tee, super adorable and comfy, and printed by Prink Shop.

6 Trendy Alternatives to ModCloth You Must Check out This Spring

Last Friday, Walmart announced in a press release that they had recently acquired trendy online retailer, ModCloth as part of their marketing tactic to take on online giant, Amazon.

While ModCloth will remain a stand-alone online merchant, independent designers who currently sell their exclusive collections on ModCloth will gain the chance to expand their reach as per the release.

It might seem odd for some customers to understand Walmart’s motives, but in recent years they have been working hard to attract younger and more affluent shoppers. But alas, like every sort of merging of businesses, this might prove a bit challenging for the American giant as customers of indie seller ModCloth are not too happy about the recent acquisition.

Fashion Find: Romper Love!

I met up with one of my best friends at UPM last Thursday and it was really nice seeing him again after all those months. Sure, things got a little crazy between us, but after months of texting and trying to come to a mutual understanding to keep a solid friendship, it was a really pleasant conversation. While we were chatting and walking about the mall, I saw a gorgeous romper in the window of Garage Clothing. Has anyone been to that store at UPM? It’s my new favorite. Anyway, as per his persistence and authoritative way, I had to try on the romper. It came in two colors, but we both mutually agree that blue is one of the best colors ever. So, yes.

Now if only this weather could warm up a little and spring could hurry the heck up, I would be totally excited to wear this out! Like, almost everyday too. Did I mention it has pockets? Anything with pockets is a great and solid find.

United State of Indiana: Wearing Your State on Your Sleeve

Since its inception in 2011, United State of Indiana has firmly believed in collaboration over competition, personal over perfect, and better over bigger. For an online shop situated in the heart of the Midwest, USI is the dominant artifact displaying state pride and love through their apparel, and working hard as a booming and creative small business.

Created by Anderson resident Graham Brown, the small business first burst onto the scene in the spring of 2011 with the simple message, “Never forget your home.” Reminding fellow Hoosiers that there is something here that you cannot find elsewhere, the message soon spread among residents, turning USI into a household name in Indiana.

After graduating college with hopes to delay adulthood, Brown ventured into music and began designing shirts for his hip-hop group, Anderson’s Most Wanted. Creating a simple image that defined everything he ever wanted to say about the love for his home, the design soon ignited a passion and struck a chord with those around him. Bold, ambiguous, and moderately controversial, Brown began printing designs for friends of a vertical American flag with the silhouette of Indiana instead of stars. Through his phantom business skills and constant enthusiasm, the venture grew into a full-fledged company. Along the way, the young entrepreneur decided upon the name, “United State of Indiana” and believed in his heart there was no better mission statement for this project than those four words.
